I Will Follow You
by Min. Ayanna Cooper
Have you ever told God that you would follow Him forward? In the midst of following Him forward, things started to get well--hanky. Next thing you know the situation that was just “hanky” has turned into a full blown hurricane with speeds up to 85 miles per hour and torrential rains that’s causing major flooding in your life. So YOU decide to go find YOU some shelter because then at least YOU can “protect” yourself from the scary storm barreling down in front of you. I guess my next question would be if you are riding with the one who controls the wind and the rain why would you get scared jump out to find your own shelter when He is shelter?
Did you jump out because you got scared?
Is it ok to get scared?
Is it ok to jump out and catch your breathe?
What do you think of the thought that is taught in many churches across the country/world by bible scholars that we don’t have strong faith if we get scared and run away? And if we do run then we MUST spend more time in the Word, on our faces and turning down our plates to build ourselves up so we don’t get scared and run again.
Is being scared a normal human reaction to adversity?
I’ve asked all of these questions because recently, I experienced my own hanky situation that quickly turned into a full blown hurricane with high winds and torrential rains so to speak. I quickly jumped out of the ship to find my own shelter. My words to God were “I’m good thanks but no thanks I don’t want to go any further!”
A few days after the incident during my reflection time, I can honestly say that I don’t have one specific reason why I decided to run away except I got scared. I was scared because one minute it's calm and the next I’m in an unbelievable storm with no shelter to speak of or at least what the world/I considers shelter.
I’m reminded of a man in the Old Testament that got scared and ran for his life just like me in
1 Kings 19:3 when adversity arrived at his doorstep. He even told the God of Heaven “that he had enough and to take his life.”
Being scared will cause you to do and say “stuff” that are contrary to what we talk and walk out when things are calm. If we look a little closer at God’s response in 1 Kings 19, He told Elijah to eat for this journey was too much for him. God responded with food to eat. God didn’t tell Elijah “Man you need to go pray on your face for 3 hours and don’t eat for 2 days” He fed him He knew Elijah needed what He had in order to move forward in His plan. Now don’t get me wrong some breakthroughs come through fasting and pray but my point with this particular story is God knew! God knew!
So as you move forward today remember He knows and will give you what you need even when you get scared and run! He is just good like that!
